Iceborne ships over 4 million units – Thumbsticks

Capcom’s Monster Hunter World expansion is a monster hit.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne has shipped over four million units worldwide since launch in September last year.

It’s an impressive number for a content expansion, particularly one that was only available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 until this year. The PC version launched on January 9.

Pitched as a premium expansion, Iceborne includes a full campaign that picks up from the conclusion of the base game. In addition to a huge – and very chilly – new region to explore, it also includes new monsters and mechanics.

Capcom has also been careful update the base game with regular free updates to keep players engaged. These include tie-ins with Horizon: Zero Dawn, Resident Evil, and The Witcher III as well as weapon and armour drops.

The strategy has paid off, with Monster Hunter: World recently reaching 15 million copies sold. And when you consider that the franchise as a whole has now sold 61 million units, the game’s blockbuster performance is even more impressive.

Capcom says it plans to maintain the momentum with future initiatives to increase the reach of the Monster Hunter brand, starting with a Universal Studios attraction in Japan and the upcoming film adaptation.
