Blizzcon 2020 won’t be happening this year due to ongoing concerns around COVID-19. Blizzard is actively looking at digital alternatives for early 2021.
Today’s news that Activision-Blizzard officially canceled Blizzcon 2020 is certainly not a surprise. After all, most conventions around the world have had to shut down due to ongoing concerns around COVID-19. Just last week, we saw Gen Con and Essen close up shop for 2020, and they’re far from the only ones. That being said, the loss of Blizzcon feels like a major blow for Blizzard fans around the globe. Of course, the health and safety of both the Blizzard team and its fans are more important than a yearly convention. So, without question, this is the right move for the team to make. Fortunately, they can still announce any of their big reveals digitally, but so many people use Blizzcon as a way to connect with the virtual friends they hang out with every day. Losing that is never going to feel good. Hopefully, Blizzard and their community can find a way to facilitate something like that in the future.
Currently, there aren’t any firm plans for an online event. However, plans seem to be in motion for something happening in early 2021. Blizzard is also looking at alternative options for all of the big esports events that culminate at Blizzcon. As with the online event, these have yet to be nailed down but expect news soon.
Without Blizzcon or a virtual equivalent planned for this year, I’m intrigued to see where Activision-Blizzard chooses to announce any of their new games. We’ve heard rumors that they’re working on a Diablo 2 remaster. I would assume they had some Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 news to share at the event.
Potentially, we could be looking at the team having a major presence at the Gamescom digital considering their history with that expo. However, we won’t know for sure until Blizzard makes further announcements. So, stick with DualShockers for all the news coming out of the many digital events happening this year.
