Japanese actress Tsubasa Honda, who most notably appeared in GTO (2012) and FMA (2017), is making an online FPS coming in Spring 2021.
On June 13, Actress Tsubasa Honda appeared on Japanese variety show Matsuko Kaigi presented by Matsuko Deluxe. On the show, Tsubasa Honda announced she’s making an online multiplayer FPS mobile game project with Microsoft Japan, and it’s scheduled to release in Spring 2021. Later on, Microsoft Japan confirmed the game’s existence with more details.
Microsoft Japan mentioned how Tsubasa Honda isn’t directly developing the game herself but has contracted developers helping her and doing consulting. Tools used for development include Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Surface, and Microsoft Teams. The game’s business model was left unspecified.
Some might think about Xbox Series X when hearing Microsoft, but again, the game will be on mobile, and will uses Azure PlayFab as its backend platform.
On the TV show, Tsubasa Honda explained the concept of her game with hand-drawn illustrations. She got the idea for the game by wanting to make an FPS where “it’s fun to shoot from the sky”, and how she wants to make a game “even non-gamers like Matsuko Deluxe will be able to enjoy”.
Tsubasa Honda (Instagram) is a talented actress who most notably appears in live-action adaptation of popular manga IPs. She was Urumi Kanzaki in the 2012 GTO live-action. Though I personally prefer the 1999 GTO live-action version and highly recommend it. Honda also played Winry in the 2017 Fullmetal Alchemist live-action movie. More recently, she voiced Natsumi in Weathering With You, the new anime movie directed by Makoto Shinkai. She’s also a YouTuber.
Personally speaking, I’ll keep an eye on this as this is definitely a very peculiar game project. One thing worth mentioning is how Matsuko Deluxe, the MC of Matsuko Kaigi, is currently one of Japan’s most popular personalities. If she endorses something, many will buy it. Tsubasa Honda’s strategy of revealing her game on Matsuko’s show will definitely pay off. We could see this game becoming a sensation in Japan when it launches Spring 2021.
