Shin Megami Tensei V Has Led Original SMT Games to Top Amazon’s PS2 Sales Charts

Following the most recent trailer for Shin Megami Tensei V, the original PS2 SMT games are seeing a surge in demand on Amazon.

After the game’s initial reveal in 2017 in the beginning of the Nintendo Switch’s life cycle, news on Shin Megami Tensei V has been noticeably quiet for some time. Thankfully, that has all changed earlier this week when Atlus shared a new trailer for the game at the recent Nintendo Direct Mini and confirmed that the long-awaited JRPG will finally be released sometime next year. While there is still quite a wait until then, those looking forward to the game have some time to catch up on past entries in the series, and that seems to be what a lot of people have in mind right now.

As seen by Wario64, the most recent reveal for Shin Megami Tensei V seems to have (unsurprisingly) caused a spike in demand for the series’ earlier entries on PS2 over on Amazon. As of this writing, the current list of PS2 bestsellers on Amazon is largely held by the PS2 SMT titles such as Digital Devil Saga, Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga 2, along with appearances from Persona 3 FES and Persona 4, given the Persona series’ history with Shin Megami Tensei.

This in itself isn’t that surprising, but given that we’re now several console generations removed from the PS2 era, it’s interesting to see the series back in the spotlight again after such a long time away. Shin Megami Tensei V has been anticipated for a while, and now that the game finally has a confirmed release window, it makes sense that longtime fans would want to return to the series before its release, or newcomers may want to try the series for the first time. Between these titles and the SMT games released on 3DS, alongside the Persona series surge in popularity over the past few years, hopefully SMTwill bring the long-running series for a whole new audience to enjoy.

Shin Megami Tensei V is currently in development exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, and is expected to release in 2021.
